Let Them, Let Me: A Mindset Shift Every Entrepreneur Needs

The Illusion of Control

In business, leadership, and life—control is often the illusion we chase hardest.

We try to control outcomes, people, reactions, timing, opinions, and success. But what if the real power is in letting go?

In a recent episode of the Rich Roll Podcast, bestselling author and speaker Mel Robbins introduces a deceptively simple practice called the Let Them Theory—and for business owners, professionals, and legacy-focused families, it’s worth a listen.

What Is the Let Them Theory?

It starts with this: when someone’s behavior stresses you out—when they ignore you, delay a decision, criticize your choices, or act out—just say to yourself:

Let them.

Let them be who they are. Let them misunderstand. Let them procrastinate. Let them make the mistake.

It’s a psychological pattern interrupter. It shifts your energy from reactivity to detachment. And weirdly enough, it works. Saying “let them” can release stress and reset your sense of control—even if what’s happening hasn’t changed.

At first, it might feel smug. Detached. Maybe even a little superior. And that’s okay. As Robbins puts it, if that moment of superiority is what you need to create space between your triggers and your response, take it. Use it. Then get to Step Two.

Step Two: Let Me

Once you say Let them, you immediately move into Let me:

Let me decide how to respond with intention.
Let me lead from my values instead of my ego.
Let me step back instead of trying to fix or manage.
Let me focus on what I can control—my choices, my energy, my response.

This is where personal responsibility and emotional maturity live. Let them is the space-maker. Let me is the decision point.

Together, they are a simple but profound tool for anyone who leads, builds, or influences others.

Applying This in Business (and Legacy)

This mindset isn’t just self-help—it’s strategy.

If you’re an entrepreneur, lawyer, advisor, or service professional, you know how often you carry the weight of others’ indecision, anxiety, or delay. You work hard to present the best options. You educate. You guide.

And still… they hesitate. Or resist. Or bail. And it can feel personal.

But here's the reframe:

  • Let them delay. Let me keep my focus.
  • Let them undervalue it. Let me protect what I know is worth it.
  • Let them default to DIY. Let me serve those ready for real strategy.

Leadership through emotional intelligence starts with detachment—not disinterest, but clarity.

That Lighthouse Moment

One of the most powerful moments in the episode came when Mel Robbins described what it feels like to live in alignment with your values.

She said:

“When the world is dark, you just have to be the one that glows in the dark. I think of myself as a lighthouse—casting light into the darkness.”

That hit home.

Because at Blue Pinnacle Law, that’s exactly what we aim to be: A legal beacon.
A steady, strategic light for business owners and families navigating uncertainty. We don’t just draft documents—we help clients anchor their plans in purpose and peace of mind.

A Personal Note: Practicing What I Preach

I’ll be honest—this mindset shift is something I’m still working on.

Especially in estate planning, I see people put off important decisions simply because they don’t feel urgent.
Setting up a trust. Protecting a business. Planning for incapacity. These are things everyone intends to get to… later.

But later often turns into too late. And when something goes wrong, the result is stress, court battles, and consequences that could have been avoided.

As someone who truly believes in the value of this work, it can feel frustrating when potential clients delay. I take it personally. I want to rescue them.
But that’s not my job.

Let them make their choices. Let them wait. Let them risk the outcome.

Let me focus on the clients who do understand the value. Let me lead with clarity and serve those who are ready to act. Let me protect their peace.

That’s where my energy belongs.

The Legal Application: Let Go, Then Get Grounded

The Let Them / Let Me framework isn’t just about emotional peace. It’s a practical mindset for running a business, protecting a family, and building a legacy.

Let go of what’s not yours to carry.
Refocus on what is.
Build structures that support what matters most.

That’s where legal planning comes in. And that’s why I do what I do.
